Capoeira and Its Global Communities

Capoeira has transcended borders, evolving from its Afro-Brazilian roots to become a global phenomenon. Today, Capoeira communities thrive in countries around the world, each bringing unique cultural influences and perspectives to the art. These global communities foster a sense of unity and shared passion, connecting practitioners of all ages and backgrounds.

UNESCO Recognition

In 2014, UNESCO inscribed capoeira on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition acknowledged what practitioners had known for centuries: capoeira is a living cultural treasure that belongs to all humanity while remaining rooted in Afro-Brazilian tradition.

From Brazil to the World

Capoeira's global spread began in earnest in the 1970s when Brazilian mestres started traveling internationally. What they brought was not just technique but an entire cultural package — music, language, philosophy, and community structure. The art took root in Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa, adapting to each context while maintaining its core identity.

The Brazil-Colorado Connection

ACVL represents a direct line from Brazil to Colorado. Mestre Betinho was born in Praia Grande, São Paulo. He trained under Brazilian mestres with lineages stretching back generations. When he founded the school in Colorado Springs in 2003, he brought authentic Brazilian capoeira to the American West.

This connection matters. Students at ACVL aren't learning an Americanized version of capoeira — they're learning the real thing, taught by someone who grew up in it.

A Global Family

The capoeira world is a vast extended family. Groups recognize each other's lineages. When capoeiristas travel, they can find a roda almost anywhere. A student from Colorado can train in São Paulo, Paris, Tokyo, or Lagos and immediately be part of the local community.

This global network, united by shared songs, movements, and traditions, is one of capoeira's greatest achievements — proof that culture can spread without losing its soul.
